Hundertwasser

What a project to have inherited! Steeped with controversy, broken promises and wide ranging public opinions. Your incumbent Mayor and a majority of existing councillor voted to support this project and we have inherited that decision, we will do our best to manage council’s responsibilities and take special care in accommodating our ratepayers concerns.

This is an emotional issue and one that we shall manage carefully. Even as a team, Go-Whangarei shares a variety of opinions on the subject, some for, some against. This ensures a good balance when it comes to making the hard decisions.

  • As your Mayor and a majority of existing councillors voted to support this development we are legally bound to continue with it.
  • Go-Whangarei stands for community and economic growth which includes the support of innovative ventures and projects. That does not necessarily mean the use of ratepayer funding.
  • The old NRC building is the ghost of previous councils and has basically remained vacant since it was purchased. It needs to be put to use and in such a way as to benefit the majority rather than a minority. The Hundertwasser project is now a private enterprise and has several successful and prominent business persons behind it so we should assume that it will succeed rather than fail.
  • For whatever reason, it will be a point of difference and will create interest be that good or bad, it is not a solution to Whangarei’s problems however it may be a start.
  • Ratepayers can rest assured we will be very cautious with regards to the injection of ratepayer money into a private project that we have yet to fully be briefed on and it is well to note that we are not of the opinion that consultancy reports are the b-all and end-all.
  • We will be a fresh new council, we are not tarred by any ones brush and we do not have alliances, we simply have our community’s interests at heart. We remain open minded.
